It has been an incredible year at Brian Miller Magic, largely thanks to all of your continued support. There have been many exciting adventures including my first tour for the American troops overseas, my TEDx talk hitting 2 million views, and most importantly: getting married to the love of my life!

In the midst of all of that, however, something less flashy but no less cool has occurred: I’ve been prominently featured in a brand new documentary about the legendary Abbott’s Get Together magic convention.

Filmmaker Anthony Gagnon’s “The Get-Together” is a passion project that he wanted to make ever since he was a young boy who used to take the annual journey to Colon, Michigan: the Magic Capital of the World (seriously, that’s the town’s legal title).

Abbott's Get Together 2015 poster Connecticut magician Brian MillerAugust 2015 was the 78th consecutive Abbott’s Get Together and I had the great pleasure of having been invited to be a featured performer at the convention. It is always an honor to be a magician that magicians want to see. I’ve performed at a variety of local and regional magic conventions over the years, but never one of this prestige.

I keep using the word “legendary” to describe this convention, and it’s not hyperbole. The convention was founded by Harry Blackstone, Sr. in 1934. Nearly major name in magic has performed at the convention over the years, including David Copperfield.

The tiny town of Colon, MI has only 1000 residents, and the population literally doubles once a year for five days during the Get Together, as magicians from all over the world descend upon it. The locals love it, contrary to what I would have believed. The whole town eagerly awaits the convention every year for the excitement and the wonder of 1000 magicians in a place so small that it literally has only one stoplight.

As fate would have it, 2015 was the year Anthony chose to fly back from LA with a single camera and one camera operator in order to capture a gritty, realistic documentary about this incredible gathering of like-minded, often strange, people that we call magicians.

Back in the fall of 2015 I was invited to speak to the employees of a company called Trivago, at their international headquarters in Dusseldorf, Germany. I had never heard of the company before, but gladly accepted the invitation.

A couple of months later I couldn’t get away from Trivago. Their commercials hit American television like a storm, and #trivagoguy became a popular hashtag on Twitter for his unusual look.

I become increasingly excited for the opportunity to speak with the employees of what seemed like a very cool company.

Less than two weeks before my trip, the Brussels airport was hit by a terrorist attack. The Dusseldorf airport is only 120 miles from Brussels, just across the border in Germany. The US Government issues a Europe-wide travel alert, and I considered postponing the trip, but ultimately decided to move forward.

I arrived in Dusseldorf, checked in to the hotel, and found a wonderful little bakery for coffee and a pastry.

That afternoon I enjoyed a walk around the major shopping district in Dusseldorf. I was fascinated by the architecture.

The next day I was given a tour of the Trivago offices by my host Anna, the organizer of the Academies program which brings in speakers like me. The Academies are a unique program at Trivago, optional and free to all employees, designed to offer broader perspectives on life. Their events range in topics from music to travel to, of course, magic.

I was immediately taken by the positive energy in the workplace. Anna informed me that the average age of a Trivago employee is 28. The offices are clearly designed to encourage collaboration and creativity. They have think tank rooms for impromptu meetings, and ‘offices’ are mobile – employees can work from wherever they choose, and with whomever they choose.

We settled into the room for my speech and I set up a few props. The crew was very kind and helpful and getting me everything I would need. I was also struggling due to jet lag and a mild sinus issue, and they were happy to get me hot tea from the kitchens on a different floor.

Anna later informed me that it was the first time she had ever seen children at an Academies event. I introduced myself to the parents and explained that it wasn’t a proper magic show, which they knew. Still, I offered to show some quick tricks just for the kids before we started, and they were absolutely delighted. It was a really enjoyable moment.

The speech itself went incredibly well. I delivered a 90 minute interactive presentation, followed by a 30 minute Q&A session. The audience was so enthusiastic that if did not arbitrarily cut it off after 2 hours it would have just kept on going. In fact, a handful stayed around to chat for another 20 minutes while I packed up. Here are some highlights:

Overall I had a magnificent time with the employees at Trivago, and I look forward to returning to Germany when I have more than just two nights to spare. It was a beautiful country that deserves weeks of exploring, I’m sure.

Gratitude is much more important than we realize. It goes way beyond “social politeness.” Studies suggest that being grateful can improve well-being, physical health, can strengthen social relationships, produce positive emotional states and help us cope with stressful times in our lives.

I have so many things to be thankful for this year. 2015 has been the best year of my life, personally and professionally.
 
Personally: As many of you know, I got engaged just before the start of the new year, and have spent most of this year helping Lindsey plan our wedding. We couldn’t be happier, and we can’t wait to start our new life as a married couple.
